Spinal cord stimulation (SCS) and peripheral nerve stimulation (PNS) are used to treat those who suffer with chronic pain that is not responding to other types of therapy. SCS and PNS work by interrupting the normal sensations of pain to block the plain. These new, groundbreaking therapies use a high frequency stimulation pattern that patient’s can’t feel during the therapy, but that yield significant results. This stimulation treatment is administered as an implant, but there is usually a test trial beforehand to ensure the treatment works for that patient first.

SCS and PNS work in a similar way to the way that rubbing an area you have injured to make it feel better does–these stimulations basically “rub” the area with an electrical stimulation to block out the pain sensation. SCS and PNS is ideal for patients with chronic pain that hasn’t responded to other types of treatments.
